BACKGROUND: In December 2010, The GEO Group, Inc. (GEO) was selected by Karnes County, Texas to design, build, finance, and manage a new detention facility under an intergovernmental service agreement with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Inmate intake began March 21, 2012.
SCOPE OF WORK: Under contract with the Karnes County, GEO provides the secure care, custody, and control for Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainees under an intergovernmental service agreement with the County. GEO provides detainees with necessary programming, medical care, recreation, visitation facilities for attorney meetings, and a teleconferencing room for video court hearings.
FACILITY DESCRIPTION: The Karnes County Civil Detention Facility is designed to allow full movement of detainees within the campus. The 76,960 sq. ft. facility consists of a two-story structure with a large internal courtyard for recreation and housing areas arrayed around the courtyard. The housing areas allow for the separation of detainees by gender, age groups, and security levels. Multipurpose rooms are located within each housing wing for social activities, recreation, and laundry facilities. Each housing room has a capacity of up to eight (8) detainees with bathroom/shower facilities, individual TVs and microwaves.
ACCREDITATION: The facility received inital accreditation from the American Correctional Association (ACA) in 2013.
