BACKGROUND: In December 2010, The GEO Group, Inc. (GEO) was selected by Karnes County, Texas to design, build, finance, and manage a new detention facility under an intergovernmental service agreement with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
SCOPE OF WORK: Under contract with the Karnes County, GEO provides a safe, clean, and family friendly environment for families under the care of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Residents are provided education programming, medical care, recreation, and visitation facilities.
FACILITY DESCRIPTION: The Karnes County Residential Center is designed to allow full movement of residents within the campus. The 76,960 sq. ft. facility consists of a two-story structure with a large internal courtyard for recreation and housing areas arrayed around the courtyard. Multipurpose rooms are located within each housing wing for social activities, recreation, and laundry facilities. Each housing room is equipped with bathroom/shower facilities, individual TVs and microwaves.
ACCREDITATION: The facility received inital accreditation from the American Correctional Association (ACA) in 2013.
