BACKGROUND: In December 1998 The GEO Group, Inc. (GEO) was selected to design, build, finance and manage a new facility in Del Rio, Texas. In addition, upon completion of the new facility, in January 2001, GEO took over the operations of the existing County Jail. The most current expansion, completed in October 2007, brought the facility to its current design capacity.
SCOPE OF WORK: The existing Val Verde County Jail and the new correctional facility are responsible for providing secure care, custody, control and transportation for county (male/female) prisoners, U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) (male/female) prisoners, and U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainees. Medical care, food service, laundry and general living conditions for offenders are provided in accordance with standards required by the State of Texas and federal guidelines.
FACILITY DESCRIPTION: The 303,543 square-foot facility features expanded kitchen areas, laundry and support services space in addition to inmate housing. The facility is constructed of masonry and steel, with individual inmate cells that can be doubled.
ACCREDITATION: The existing County Jail is certified by the Texas Commission on Jail Standards. The new facility meets both Texas Jail Commission Standards and the Standards of the American Correctional Association (ACA). Accreditation by the National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC) was received in January 2003, although it is no longer required by the client.
