In January 2004, the U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) awarded a contract to provide beds for male and female adult and juvenile illegal aliens. The South Texas ICE Processing Center, a minimum, medium and maximum security facility, opened in May 2005.
Recreation yards are attached to all housing units. Dedicated space is provided for support services, including food service, a medical service area, and a central laundry.
Visitation
Consistent with current ICE Pandemic Response Requirements (PRR), STIPC will only have social visitation when the facility is in green status. Facility status can be relayed over the phone and a flyer is posted at all times outside the facility showing the weekly status.
Adult visitors must present a valid, verifiable government-issued identification card to enter the facility.
Minors who are visiting the facility must be accompanied by an adult guardian (18 years or older). Minors must not be left unaccompanied in the waiting room, visiting room or any other area.

Dress Codes for Visitors
The facility maintains a dress code for visitors.
The dress code shall be posted and freely available to the public. The minimum dress code is as follows.
Female Visitors Age 12 and Older
Male Visitors Age 12 and Older
The center achieved initial accreditation through the American Correctional Association (ACA) in 2008 and re-accreditation in 2011, 2014, 2017, 2020 and 2023 with a score of 99%.
