On July 27, 1999, South African Custodial Services (SACS) was awarded a contract to finance, design, construct, operate and maintain a 3,024-bed maximum security prison in the Limpopo Province.
The GEO Group financed, designed, and constructed the Center. The facility offers structured day programs, including work, education, training, recreation, physical education, and counseling.
South African Custodial Services has designed housing units that group similar populations around a common core design and incorporate education, sport, recreation, vocational training, and healthcare into central areas. Each housing group has its own indoor recreation hall and adjacent recreation court.
In August 2003, the Center became the first in the country and the continent of Africa to obtain the International Standard Organization (ISO) 9001:2008 certification from the South African Bureau of Standards. What makes this achievement even more remarkable is the fact that this certification was obtained within 18 months after the official opening of the Center and with its first application.
